Abstract

This article is a part of a research in Thai puppetry exhibition at King Rama II Memorial Park (Rama II Park). The purpose of this research was to develop digital interactive Thai puppetry exhibit to attract younger generation visitors. To prepare the research with the desired quality, the researcher studied the physical structure of Thai puppets, the movement of Thai puppet play, and the theory of multiple intelligences for children. Practice-based research methodology was conducted in this research. Research methodology included 1) observation and documentation of Thai puppets conserved by Rama II Park, 2) studying of Thai puppet movement based on Pairoj Thongkamsuk’s Thai puppet dance demonstration video clip, 3) studying of physical space and history of Ruen Asom —a building where interactive exhibit would be installed, and 4) design Practice. This research revealed 3 outcomes: 1) 3D scanning of Thai puppets, 2) digital interactive kiosk design, 3) development of interactive content by using Touchdesigner software, and 4) feedback from participants (N=37). The last section of the article is the summary of the knowledge gained from the research, mainly on digital interactive puppet exhibit which is still novel in exhibition. Moreover, it was found that torso control was the most crucial part of human-computer interaction in mimicking real puppet movement.
