Abstract

The objective of this qualitative research is to study models and processes of conflict management in Pru Khuan Kreng Community, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The research method based on qualitative data upon primary and secondary sources as well as participative observation, non-participative observation, including in-depth interviews and group discussions with the community leaders, local philosophers, local government officials, and residents of eleven villages.

The study showed that (1) peace – making plans focusing on prevention and resolution based on community culture leading toward social harmony. The causes of most of the conflicts were associated with community resources in the dimensions of land use, fishing, and making use of resources from the Peat Swamp Forest. Therefore, villagers perceived the necessity of shared interests by discussing conflicts to be prevented or resolved. Their opinions helped create community rule. (2) the result from studying models and processes of conflict management revealed that mixed-conflict management methods were used by the community in negotiating through kinship and respected mediators. Local conflict resolution was achieved by individual mediators and groups. Those who break community rules must compensate for damages. The ultimate goal would be integration for better rapport and mutual life. These findings suggested that The Thai public sector might apply lessons from community to resolve conflicts and enable communities to solve their own problems, preserving lifestyles and developing plans for future successful conflict resolution.
