Strong community and industrial conflict management in Khlong Tha Chang Community, Surat Thani
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research article aims to study the role of social capital in sustainable natural resource management in the Tha Chang Canal community, Tha Chang District, Surat Thani Province. It analyzed the relationships and collaboration between the community and the industrial sector and explored mechanisms for resolving environmental conflicts. A qualitative research approach was employed, collecting data through in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and on-site observations. The findings revealed that social capital played a crucial role in establishing cooperative networks, uniting the community, and strengthening internal group dynamics. The community formed an Environmental Protection Committee to manage natural resources and mitigate the impacts of industrial activities. The relationship between the community and the industrial sector had both positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, industrial facilities supported community activities, such as distributing relief supplies during the COVID-19 crisis and providing local employment opportunities. However, on the negative side, the community faced environmental issues, such as water pollution and noise from industrial operations, leading to skepticism about the factories’ activities. Conflict resolution mechanisms included creating spaces for dialogue, joint meetings between the community, factories, and government agencies, and promoting conservation activities such as reforestation and fish restocking. Continuous participation and communication were essential in reducing conflicts and fostering mutual trust. This study highlights that integrating social capital, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and receiving support from governmental agencies are critical factors in the sustainable management of natural resources in the Khlong Tha Chang community. It also provides recommendations for enhancing multi-sectoral cooperation to achieve balanced and sustainable community development.
