Impoliteness Strategies in the Discourse of Interviewing People in Trendy news

Abstract

This article aimed to study and analyze impoliteness strategies in the language used by interviewers and participants, who hold differing views, during interviews featured on news trending shows. Data was gathered from personal interviews on "Hone-Krasae" and "Tang Khon Tang Khit" between June 2018 and June 2019. The findings revealed two primary impoliteness strategies:

The 1st strategy called Questioning Strategy which comprises six sub-strategies: 1.Asking in a derogatory way to provoke emotions, 2.Challenging questions, 3.Leading questions, 4.Questioning using gender and sexuality, 5.Aggressive questioning with continuous questions, and 6.Judgmental questioning. The 2nd strategy called Other Strategies which includes: 1.Warning, 2.Expressing opinions in a critical manner, 3.Cursing and using taboo words or slang indicating forbidden words or topics. The researcher identified that these two central impoliteness strategies were evident in interviews from trending news, in both the language of the interviewer/host and the participants, who held divergent views. Moreover, the study found that the dialogue between participants exhibited a broader range of impoliteness strategies compared to the language used by the interviewer or host when interacting with the participants.
