Abstract
The purposes of the research entitled “The Study of the Local Lanna Food Naming in Chiang Rai Province” were to study the strategy of the local Lanna food naming in Chiang Rai province .
The researcher collected the local Lanna food names from 18 districts in Chiang Rai province from the interview of the intellectuals of the local Lanna food names and the groups of the people who cooked the local Lanna food.
The results of the study reveals that there are 2 strategies of Lanna food naming consisting of the direct food naming culture and the comparative food naming . In terms of the direct food naming, there are 4 kinds by the meaning of the form in the first position of the food name consisting of the name of the meat dish begins with the kind of food, the way of cooking, the ingredient and the characteristics of food.
In terms of the comparative food naming, it is the form of the food naming with the comparison and the direct in some part. It is found that there are 3 metaphors in Lanna food names : Animate, Materials and Natural metaphors.
