Abstract

This research was developed from the research “The Economic Changes of Local Fishermen in Pak Poon Village, Mueang District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province” which was funded by the Area Based Collaborative Research for Undergraduate and Master student: (ABC-PUS/MAG), The Thailand Research Fund. The subject of this research is to study the changes of local fishermen under the local history framework. This research places the importance on holistic study and focuses on Total History. These are regarded a new notion for studying local histories in Thai society. This research is framed under the notion of local economy which is the belief that villagers can sustain their community firmly by properly applying their knowledge and village’s resources base. To collect information, the researcher chose 2 methods: documentary study and field study with observation, survey and in-depth interview.

The research result shows that the way of life of fishermen of village : Moo 2 and 4, Pak Poon Sub-district has changed. These changes, considered from its type of production, are divided into 3 periods of time. The first period is the economic system before year B.E.2500: local fishermen moved from Phetchaburi Province and its type of production relied on the richness of natural resources. The second period is when the production technology improvement and the natural resources degradation occurred during B.E.2500-2530. This sort of production is a consequence of country development policy focusing on economic development. Thus, the natural resources degradation are made. The third is the period of marine natural resources restoration in B.E. 2540 until present. The most important conditions for marine natural resources restoration are the local fishermen experiences in fishery and the Community Well-being Management Project by the Pak Poon Sub-district Administration Organization with integrated solution for the whole villagers.

At present, Pak Poon fishermen have their own unique way of fishing which shows its identity. This is a result of the learning process in fishing in the past. Its uniqueness is that they apply their fishery knowledge to their community and resources base. This suits the concept of local economy very well. When the fishermen apply their knowledge from the past to fairly exploit resources, it make them live in a more sustainable way. They less rely on factors from outside community due to the richness of food from production.
