Limestone mining management in ISO 14001 standard: Community and environmental impacts in Nakhon Si Thammarat

Abstract
The purposes of this research were 1) to study the results of the implementation of the ISO 14001 standard system for limestone mining companies as community impact and environment in Nakhon Si Thammarat province, and 2) to study the impact on communities and environment of the limestone mining. It was a survey research and action research with a study from two certified companies, Sila Aree Co.,Ltd., and Pha Thong Thung Song company. The sample group was 52 employees and executives using a specific random sampling method and 5 limestone mining companies that are not ISO 14001 certified, namely and Pha Thong Thung Song Co., Ltd.; and five non-certified companies, Perm Phol Karn Yo Tha Co.,Ltd., Mana Sila 2537 Co.,Ltd., Wang Sila Co.,Ltd., Sila Thong Co.,Ltd., and Sichon Sila Thong Co.,Ltd. The sample consisted of 102 employees and executives by using a specific random sampling method. and to study the impact on communities and the environment of limestone mining. Research sample consisted of 10 people that were community leaders, heads of local government agencies, and stakeholders. Research tools were questionnaires, structured interviews, workshop data collection, and assessment forms. Statistic software was used for quantitative data analysis. Analytical statistics were mean, percentage, and standard deviation including qualitative data analysis and descriptive statistics were used.
The results of the research found that 1) The result from ISO 14001 standard adoption for the limestone mining operation and the impact of the environmental communities in Nakhon Si Thammarat province indicated that overall, it was at the highest level. As for limestone mining companies that were not certified with the ISO 14001 system, they reduce their impact on communities overall at a high level which are clearly different in the environmental policy of the organization and, 2) Impact on community and environment of the limestone mining operation, between the certified with ISO 14001 companies and non-certified ISO 14001 were affected in different environmental matters.
