Prospect of Civil Society Studies: A Retrospective Analysis

Abstract
This study aims to provide a critical assessment of a burgeoning literature in civil society studies. During the past three to four decades, the scholarly debate on civil society has become more contested on several issues such as the relationship between civil society and democracy as well as the transformation of civil society. Against this backdrop, this essay offers seven observations with regard to the way to conceptualize civil society, the dynamic nature of civil society and several myths regarding civil society studies. Finally, this article proposes various suggestions to advance future research agenda on this important area of investigation.
