Abstract

A study of business changes related to street vendors in the Silom Road area aimed to analyze the opinions of business owners in Silom Road where a policy called “Return the Foot- path to Pedestrians”, the street vending banning policy has been implemented. The data was collected by a survey of 150 sampling questionnaires of shop owners and motorcycle taxi drivers, and detailed interviews of four samples.

The study found that during the implementation of the “Return the Foot- path to Pedestrians Policy, In 2015–2018, the number of hawkers and pedestrians as well as the number of customers decreased. Respondents also reported a continuous decline in income from their businesses. However, there was no improvement in the cleanliness, orderliness, and traffic flow in the Silom area. The entrepreneurs of the Silom area opined that street vendors were needed in the area not just for their own livelihood and that of their families, but that their presence in the area also led
to increased footfall which also benefits both the shop owners and their customers.
