The Role of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society in Establishing and Promoting Networks Among Intellectuals in Asia
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines the role of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society (IACSS) in fostering cross-border academic networks and how young intellectuals in Asia construct shared understandings of Asia. A qualitative, interpretive approach was employed, drawing on interviews with 17 participants and field observations during key IACSS activities. Findings indicate that IACSS operates on multiple levels: it provides a platform for cross-border knowledge exchange, nurtures emerging scholars, facilitates networks beyond formal meetings, and contributes to the creation of Asia as a dynamic concept through cross-linguistic and intergenerational exchanges. Participants actively engage in defining and negotiating the meaning of Asia, resulting in understandings that are open, diverse, and sustainable. The study further demonstrates that the construction of Asia and academic networks is not solely the product of institutional structures or formal conferences, but emerges from direct experiences, interpersonal relationships, and continuous engagement of young scholars. This highlights the dynamic nature of knowledge production in Asia and the importance of spaces that allow all participants to actively contribute, reflect, and co-create meaning within the regional academic community. The research recommendation, future efforts should develop sustained mentoring, post-conference collaboration, and multilingual support, alongside longitudinal and comparative studies, to better understand the sustainability and dynamics of knowledge production in Asia.
