Factors Influencing Settlement Intention of the Floating Population in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR)

Abstract
This research aims to examine the factors influencing the intention to settle among the floating population Bangkok Metropolitan Region (BMR), comprising Bangkok, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom, Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, and Samut Sakhon. It is quantitative research based on data from the National Migration Survey of Thailand 2021-2024, National Statistics Office. The sample includes 2,341 individuals who were the floating population residing in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results showed that 47.03% of the sample intended to settle. Logistic regression analysis revealed that education and income were positively associated with the intention to settle. Those whose homeland was in a southern of Thailand had lower odds of intending to settle in host province than those whose homeland was in abroad, and those residing in Nakhon Pathom, Samut Prakan, and Samut Sakhon had significantly higher odds of intending to settle in their host province than those in Bangkok (p < 0.05). Demographic characteristics such as sex, age, and marital status showed no statistically significant association. These findings reflect that the intention to settle among the floating population is linked to the spatial context, economy, and urban structure. Policy decisions should prioritize infrastructure development alongside human capital development.
