Development Agricultural Tourism Areas Based on The Concept of Universal Design for Farmer Groups in San Kamphaeng District, Chiang Mai Province

Abstract

This research aimed to examine the resources and needs of a farming community, and to utilize the findings as a foundational database for designing and developing a prototype model for agrotourism based on the concept of universal design to ensure equitable accessibility. A participatory action research approach was employed, involving 23 key informants through in-depth interviews, community forums, focus group discussions, and interactive workshops. The research findings revealed that while the area possessed high potential regarding natural resources and distinctive local wisdom, it faced physical and infrastructural limitations that hindered vulnerable groups. Economically, challenges in income distribution were identified, whereas environmentally, the community confronted impacts from urban expansion. Consequently, the community expressed a need for management skill development and environmental improvements to ensure safety. The researcher thus collaboratively developed the prototype model, resulting in a body of knowledge that encompasses spatial analysis, site planning, physical design, activity organizing, and participatory management. This study demonstrates that universal design serves as a vital tool for fostering equity and expanding sustainable economic opportunities, which can be further utilized as a model to elevate other agrotourism destinations.
