Situation and Economic Value Estimation of Thai Elderly’s Socio-Economic Activities

Abstract
The purposes of this article were to study the situation and to estimate the economic values of Thai elderly’s socio-economic activities in three aspects: domestic and care-giving services to household members, community services, and working. The data were derived from the 2011 survey of the older persons in Thailand conducted by the National Statistical Office. The results showed that 90.6% of the elderly participated in domestic and care-giving services to household members, 26.9% of themparticipated in community services, and 39.0% worked. The economic values of Thai elderly’s socio-economic were about 2.46% of gross domestic product (GDP): non-market activities (domestic and care-giving services to household members and community
services) were about 0.97% of the GDP while market activity (working)was about 1.49% of the GDP.
