Global Governance of the Reduction of Food Loss and Food Waste

Abstract

This article aims to explain the global governance process of reducing food loss and food waste, which is one of the crucial global problems nowadays. Not only do food loss and food waste affect global food security, but they also worsen the environmental condition. The global governance process will be divided into three phases: managing knowledge and building awareness, developing norms and promulgating recommendations, and institutionalizing such norms and recommendations. Within these processes, many actors are involved, such as international organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, and civil societies. This article concludes that the global governance processes lead to cooperation at the worldwide level. They also standardized food loss and food waste measurement and harmonized the direction of solutions to the problem. However, food loss and food waste issues persist, so the global governance processes must continue. It must also emphasize creating a network of 'agents of change' in each country to institutionalize norms and recommendations that will lead to sustainable solutions to this problem.
