Management of the Community Occupational Group for Khim Musical Instrument Production in Thung Fai Subdistrict, Mueang District, Lampang Province

Abstract

This qualitative research aimed (1) to analyze the operational practices of the community occupation group producing Thai dulcimers (khim) in Thung Fai Sub-district, Lampang Province, and (2) to explore management approaches for sustaining and developing the group. Key informants included dulcimer producers, local wisdom holders, community leaders, and personnel from local administrative organizations. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions, and documentary studies. The findings revealed that the production of dulcimers in Thung Fai Sub-district has been rooted in local craftsmanship since 1996, when knowledge from experienced workers in a Thai musical instrument factory was transferred to the community. Production gradually expanded to household levels, generating income and recognition. The group mainly produces two types of dulcimers, the “butterfly dulcimer” and the “portable dulcimer,” both highly regarded for their quality in Thai music ensembles. However, the community group faced internal conflicts regarding product quality and benefit distribution, leading to fragmentation into individual producers. This weakened the group’s unity and reduced its bargaining power in the market. In terms of management approaches, four key areas for development were identified: (1) strengthening internal management systems to enhance transparency and cooperation, (2) developing labor skills and transferring craftsmanship knowledge to younger generations, (3) supporting marketing strategies, branding, and networking at provincial and national levels, and (4) promoting supportive policies from government and local administrative organizations. Overall, the research highlights the importance of effective management in strengthening local wisdom-based occupational groups, enabling them to sustain their cultural identity while remaining competitive in contemporary society.
