Effect of Science Lab Activities in The Science Museum Using Inquiry and Storyline Approaches on Science Learning Motivation of Thai Children

Abstract

One of the primary missions of many science museums is encouraging visitors to learn science. Nevertheless, museum’s inquiry based educational activities were not as effective for participant group of age interval 9-15. This study seeks to establish a science museum educational program using both storyline and inquiry approaches, and analyzing its effect on participant’s science learning motivation by comparing the storyline incorporated inquiry-based educational program to the current inquiry-based education program available in the science museum. The experimental research implemented 3 x 2 factorial experiment with 180 samples obtained by convenience sampling. The samples were 9 to 15 years old participants of science laboratory activities during February to April 2023 at Rama 9 Museum of the National Science Museum (NSM) in Thailand. Research tools conducted on the participants are as follow; 1) The six science laboratory activity plans consisting of plans applying both inquiry and storyline approaches and plans with inquiry-based only approach, each plans were designed to have specific level of inquiry, which are either open, guided or structured inquiry, and 2) A corresponding 15 items questionnaire with 7 points scale in science learning motivation having a reliability of 0.81. Analysis of covariance on the collected data showed a higher post-test mean score implying higher motivation in learning science for participants who followed the science laboratory activity plan using storyline and inquiry approaches in comparison to the inquiry approach plans with a statistical significant of 0.5.  Furthermore, in both cases, plans with guided inquiry level suggested higher science learning motivation in comparison to plans with open and structured inquiry, respectively.
