THE DEVELOPMENT OF LESSON PLANS ON BASIC TRUMPET SKILLS BY APPLYING MOTHER TONGUE APPROACH FOR PRESCHOOL CHILDREN

The purposes of this qualitative research were 1) To construct trumpet lesson plans by applying mother tongue approach for preschool children, and 2) To study the effect of using trumpet lesson plans by applying mother tongue approach for preschool children. The key informants in this study were selected by using purposive sampling technique and divided into 2 groups that are 1) 5 experts from 3 areas; 1 in music early childhood, 1 in mother tongue method, and 3 in trumpet and brass pedagogy, and 2) 6 preschool children age 4 – 6 years old. Research instruments are 1) Lesson plans, 2) Interview questions for focus group discussion, and 3) Students’ learning observation form. The trumpet lesson plans were developed by analyzing document data and evaluated by the experts in focus group discussion. After that lesson plans trial was then conducted with preschool children, and the effects of using trumpet lesson plans were studied by observing the students’ learning. Data was gathered and analyzed using content analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1) The trumpet lesson plans indicated 15 lessons (50 mins/lesson) divided into 12 private lessons, and 3 group lessons. The activities were designed according to early childhood development and in accordance with the content of trumpet 5 basic skills: posture, air, embouchure, tone production, and fingering. 2) Teaching method applying mother approach was effective in developing students’ skills including listening, observing, imitating, repetition, encouragement, private and group learning, and parental involvement. 3) The result of using trumpet lesson plans indicated that the lessons could improve 5 basic trumpet skills of 6 preschool children. These showed the effectiveness of the developed trumpet lesson plans by applying mother tongue approach for preschool children, and the quality in terms of activities, songs, media, and learning method was suitable for preschool students.
