AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF VERB PHRASES IN PHAYAO INSCRIPTIONS

Abstract

The paper aimed at analyzing verb phrase in Phayao inscriptions.The researcher used the language translation criteria as the concept of analysis. Fifty-eight Phyayao inscriptions were used as the main source for the present study with the scope of the study based on three analytical topics; (i) main part of verb phrases, (ii) supporting part of a verb phrase, and (iii) modifier of verb a phrase. The major part of verb phrase was divided into two kinds, single verb, and serial verb while an additional part of verb phrases was divided into five parts consisting of an auxiliary verb, negation, direct object, dative (indirect object), and complement. Verb phrase modifier was classified into three kinds; a prepositional phrase, an adverbial phrase, and quantifiers. Findings indicated 30 single verbs, 11 serial verbs, 10 auxiliary verbs including 3 additional negative words, 10 directs objects, 5 prepositional modifiers, 4 adverbial modifiers and 5 phrasal quantified modifiers.
