Abstract

The objectives of this research were: 1) to study the history and evolution of Buddhist Chatra (tiered umbrellas) within the Lanna context; 2) to analyze current problems and conservation practices amidst changing global trends; and 3) to propose sustainable creative conservation guidelines that integrate local wisdom with modern innovation. This study employed a qualitative research methodology, utilizing documentary analysis and in-depth interviews with 25 key informants, including master craftsmen (Sala), ecclesiastical officials, and expert academics..

          The research results revealed that

1)History and Evolution: Lanna Chatra serve as symbols of power and Dhamma principles, reflecting the concept of the center of the universe. Their evolution is categorized into three eras: the ancient era characterized by natural materials, the middle era featuring intricate perforated metalwork, and the contemporary era utilizing industrial materials.

2)Current Problems: A critical issue is the crisis of knowledge succession due to a declining number of aging craftsmen and a lack of interest among the younger generation. Furthermore, the spiritual value of these artifacts is being diminished by commercialization.

3)Creative Conservation Guidelines: Sustainable conservation should be implemented through a four-pillar model: Policy (registration of master craftsmen), Technology (digital databases and AR/VR systems), Economy (elevating artifacts into creative products), and Society (establishing tripartite collaboration networks). This approach follows the "Living Heritage" model to preserve Lanna Buddhist art identity amidst the shifts of the digital age.
