THE EFFECT OF A RESILIENCE ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM ON SELF-ESTEEM AND DEPRESSION OF THE ELDERLY WITH A DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

Abstract

The purpose of research was to examine the effects of a resilience enhancement program on self-esteem and depression in older persons with a depressive disorder. The sample were involved in a study of the elderly in the depression clinic of a community hospital in Southern Thailand. The sample of 40 was divided into experimental and control groups, each containing 20 members. The experimental group received the nine-week mental strengthening program with a 45-60 minute session once a week, while the control group received routine care. The data were collected by using a general information form, the Thai Geriatric Depression Scale, and a self-esteem questionnaire. The resilience enhancement program was developed by the researchers for the experimental group. The instruments was assessed reliability of 0.90 demonstrated an acceptable level of reliability. The demographic data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while the hypotheses for Self- Esteem and Depression were tested utilizing independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U tests.

            The results that: 1) After completion of the resilience enhancement program, the experimental group had mean scores of self-esteem statistically significantly higher than their pre-program scores and their depression levels were statistically significantly lower than their level before receiving the program; and 2) Compared to the control group, the experimental group who received the resilience enhancement program had statistically significantly higher mean scores of self-esteem than those who were in control group and their mean score of depression was also statistically significantly lower than that of the control group.
