The Development of English Reading Skills for Freshmen of Phetchabun Rajabhat University through Reading Skill Exercises using the SQ6R Technique

Abstract

        This research aimed to: 1) develop English reading skill exercises, 2) enhance English reading skills using the SQ6R technique to meet the 80/80 effectiveness criterion, 3) compare English reading test scores before and after the intervention, and 4) examine students' satisfaction after using the reading skill development exercises. The sample group consisted of 11 first-year students from the Business English program at Phetchabun Rajabhat University during the second semester of the 2024 academic year. The research instruments were English reading skill exercises and a student satisfaction questionnaire. The statistics used were percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test. The research findings revealed that: 1. The post-test scores from the English reading skills development test for the first-year students at Phetchabun Rajabhat University were significantly higher than the pre-test scores at a statistical significance of .001. 2. The effectiveness of the English skills development test was 83.57/88.64, which is higher than the set criterion of 80/80 and 3. The comparison of English reading test scores showed that the pre-test mean score was 40.00, and the post-test mean score was 42.53, indicating an improvement in the students' reading skills. Overall, the students' satisfaction with the English reading skills development test was at the highest level, representing 78.86 percent.
