Abstract

This study aimed to 1) examine artist admiration behaviors among fans; 2) compare the levels of celebrity worship among fans with different personal characteristics; 3) investigate the influence of celebrity worship on fans’ happiness; and 4) examine the influence of celebrity worship on fans’ anxiety. This quantitative research employed a questionnaire as the data collection instrument. The sample consisted of fans aged 18 years and above who actively participated in sharing artist-related content and activities through social media platforms. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Independent Samples t-test, One-way ANOVA, and Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. Statistical significance was set at the .05 level. The findings revealed that most respondents openly identified themselves as fans, had been fans for approximately eight years on average, and followed their favorite artists on a daily basis. Overall, the respondents demonstrated a moderate level of celebrity worship. When considering each dimension, Entertainment-Social showed the highest mean score (X̄ = 3.44), followed by Intense-Personal (X̄ = 2.71) and Borderline-Pathological (X̄ = 2.00), respectively. In addition, the respondents reported a level of happiness comparable to that of the general population and experienced a moderate level of anxiety. The hypothesis testing results indicated that personal characteristics, including gender, marital status, caregiving responsibilities, domicile, educational level, age, occupation, and average monthly income, did not significantly affect the level of celebrity worship. Furthermore, all three dimensions of celebrity worship, Entertainment-Social, Intense-Personal, and Borderline-Pathological had no statistically significant influence on fans’ happiness or anxiety. The findings suggest that most fans’ admiration for artists remains within a normal range, primarily emphasizing entertainment and social interaction rather than excessive emotional attachment or pathological involvement. Moreover, celebrity worship alone may not be sufficient to explain variations in happiness and anxiety among fans. These psychological outcomes are likely influenced by a broader range of psychological and social factors beyond celebrity worship.
