Abstract

This study aimed to 1) examine the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of rubber farmers; 2) assess the quality of life (QoL) of rubber farmers; and 3) investigate the utilization of community capital for enhancing the quality of life of rubber farmers in Pa Phayom District, Phatthalung Province, Thailand. The sample consisted of 276 registered rubber farmers, determined using Yamane’s formula. Data were collected through questionnaire with a Cronbach’s alpha reliability of 0.82. Statistical analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, Chi-square test, and ANOVA. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents were male (58.3%), with an average age of 34.88 years, and 45.3% held a bachelor's degree. The average household size was 4 members (81.5% had fewer than 5 members), with an average of 3 agricultural laborers per household. Farmers cultivated an average plantation area of 4.42 rai, earning an average annual income of THB 413,826.09. Interpersonal communication was the primary source of information. Overall quality of life was at a moderate level (X̄ = 2.15, S.D.= 0.175), with the environmental dimension scoring highest, followed by health, economic, psychological, and social relationship dimensions. The overall utilization of community capital was also at a moderate level (X̄ = 2.06, S.D. = 0.112), where physical capital recorded the highest mean score (X̄ = 2.12), followed by human capital (X̄ = 2.07). Hypothesis testing indicated that education level, household size, and community capital utilization were significantly related to farmers' quality of life at the .05 significance level. Practical recommendations suggest that relevant agencies should integrate physical and human capital enhancements to mitigate economic vulnerability and sustainably uplift farmers' quality of life.
