Simultaneous Speech in Thai Conversation: A Case Study of Hone Krasae Television Program

Abstract
This article aims to study positions and functions of simultaneous speech which are interruptions and overlaps in Thai language conversations. In each conversation, there are more than two participants-as litigants and participants. The data collected from 4 episodes a timeframe of 3 hours 11 minutes 11 seconds from television program broadcast by the name of Hone Krasae. The result shows that simultaneous speech appears in two positions: interruptions and overlaps. The most preferred position is interruptions. Twelve functions of simultaneous speech comprise: 1) arguing colloquially; 2) asking; 3) providing information; 4) answering; 5) showing a negative attitude; 6) suppressing the conversation; 7) guiding words; 8) backchannelling; 9) summarizing discussions; 10) revising words; 11) attracting attention; and 12) reminding. The most preferred simultaneous speech functions are arguing colloquially, asking, and providing information, in decreasing order of significance.
