Semantic Extension of the Words “nàk” and “baw” in Thai

Abstract
This article aims to analyze and compare the semantic extension the word “nàk” and “baw” in Thai by using 300 sample sentences from the Thai National Corpus. The study is based on principled polysemy, metaphor, and metonymy. It was found that antonyms “nàk” and “baw” have 7 same meaning domains, there are “weight”, “target impact force”, “degree of loudness and strength of sound”, “degree of difficulty”, “degree of complexity of content” “type of food”, and “degree of severity”. There is only the word “nàk” that has “emphasis” domain. A “weight” domain is a prototype meaning which extends to another meaning by the radial network. Each meaning uses different facet from “weight” meaning. Metonymy is a main cognitive mechanism in the role of semantic extension of the word “nàk” and “baw”, whereas metaphor is a secondary mechanism. This study indicates that there is a correspondence in the semantic extension of the antonyms
