Keywords:
citizenship, traditional culture, local governmentAbstract
The current study aimed to examine citizenship in traditional culture of residents in Kalasin Town Municipality. It employed qualitative methods which are in-depth and semi-structured interviews. Key informants were purposively selected. Data were collected from October 2016 to May 2017.
The findings are as follows. On giving priority to culture, findings revealed that citizens became more enthusiastic in going to the polls. This implied that the residents recognized their civic duty and served as the indicator of each individual’s citizenship. Findings also showed that schools fostered information on election, as a foundation of democracy, to the youths. Local tradition and culture were anchored in the residents’ everyday life, bringing about the community unity, maintaining community identity, and tightening the bonding between them. Moreover, the residents were strictly aboding to the laws, rules and regulations, social values, and traditions, helping to preserve the social decorum. This article suggests that the municipality should provide a platform for public education and channels for information dissemination and development cooperation from various sectors.
