Mittakam: the Development and Negotiation of Space

Abstract

The purposes of this study are to examine about definition of Chao Phraya riverside area from the government’s and resident’s point of view, and to study the meaning of negotiation of Chao Phraya riverside and expectation from resident about living the river in the future. As a result, the government was defined Chao Phraya riverside as the area of development and organization that can be explained in three dimensions including 1) to consider the area along the Chao Phraya riverside through the physical dimensions as part of the overall urban area, 2) to consider this area as the dimension of economic investment, and 3) to create the meaning for the residents of the Mittakam community as the invaders of the government area. The meaning of the area along the Chao Phraya riverside from the point of view of the residents as "areas of relationship" which can be described in 3 dimensions as follows 1) memorial area about ancestors, 2) the area of the past that once relied on the river: the river of life, and 3) the area along the Chao Phraya riverside is conducive for living in urban cities. Definition of negotiation and expectation of compromising residents with government to live in the Chao Phraya riverside area in the future have the negotiation types including direct negotiation with government through talking with government officer and indirect negotiation.
