A Comparative Study of Japanese Conjunctive Expressions on Humanities and Science Textbooks

Abstract
Due to the fact that there are several conjunctive expressions in Japanese, it is important to identify the difference of usage for more effective use. One helpful aspect is language style. Consequently, this paper will study the difference of conjunctive expressions used in different writing style works. As a model, I followed
the reference of Ishiguro (2016), which studies conjunctive expressions in Social Science textbooks, and chose to compare Humanities textbooks and Science textbooks, focusing on the expressions which appear at the beginning of each paragraphs. After analyzing 654 expressions, I found that many uses of comparative
expressions (e.g. ‘ippō’) and resultative expressions ‘kōshite’ ‘konoyōni’ in both types of textbooks, while uncommon expressions such as ‘tsuide’ and ‘yotte’ are found particularly in History and Mathematics textbooks, respectively. On the other hand, ‘sunawachi’, ‘nao’ and adverbial phrases are found to be used
differently, which depends on language styles.
