Abstract

The objective of this research was to study English language style of CNN breaking News on Twitter “CNN Breaking News” in 4 main points which were diction, syntax, tone, and theme. The sample was 150 pieces of breaking news on Twitter “CNN Breaking News” collected during 1st – 30th September 2017. The research methodology was documentary research. The research instrument was language style analysis form. Content analysis was used to analyze the data based on language style framework as designed. The research showed that the language style of breaking news were as follows:  1) Diction, all 150 pieces of breaking news were written by using informal words. The breaking news was mostly written by using denotation. The specialization of vocabulary was not often used in writing breaking news. 2) Syntax, the most common sentence style used in writing breaking news was Present Simple Tense.  The type of complex sentence and structure of active voice were also mainly used in writing breaking news. The mostly used punctuation in writing breaking news was Comma (,). 3) Tone, breaking news was mainly written under the tone of “candid”.  And 4) Theme, breaking news was mainly written for the purpose “to inform”. The findings will be useful not only for teaching and learning in the subjects of English Reading and Writing and English in Mass media but also be useful for other people who are interested in reading English news on Twitter Application or reading breaking news from other news agencies through the internet. Moreover, this can be used as the guideline for Thai Mass Media to report news in English on Twitter or other applications.
