Bann Ma Ying’s Pottery Development Based on Participatory Design Process

Abstract
The research came from academic service under the Cultural Heritage Based Development Project, Industrial Promotion Center Region 10. This project aims to develop local handicraft based on handicraft making wisdom in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province through participatory design process. The sample of this research was divided into 2 groups including 1) Bann Ma Ying Farmers’ Community Enterprise as an information source and 2) dealers and consumers group as a source for product design analysis. The results of the study can be summarized into 4 parts including 1) Bann Ma Ying Farmers’ Community Enterprise is located in Mokkhalan ancient community. The locals make pottery for a living. Most popular pottery recently is utensils such as pots and plant pots. 2) The colour of the pottery is red clay which comes from the clay in lowlands located in the east of Ban Ma Ying. The pottery is not coated with enamel or coloured on the patterns. The patterns on the products come from fretwork. 3) Products of the market demand temporary outdoor bollard lamps. 4) The prototype products from this research inspired from shadow play fretwork included the 40 x 25 cm and 35 x 25 cm bollard lamps. The product development in this research was based on a participatory design process. Researchers, designers and dealers cooperated to create guidelines for product development and experimented the prototype until it was completed. The manufacturers can reproduce and make commercial sales. This is considered
a mutual interest and also a build on an idea for product development.
