A Study on Batik to Enhance the Local Identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province a Case Study: Batik Samphaothong Group of Tai Samphao Sub-District, Phra Phrom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

Abstract
This research was a study on batik to enhance the local identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat province, a case study: batik Samphaothong Group of Tai Samphao Sub-District, Phra Phrom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat province. It was based on qualitative research methodology. The purposes of the research were to study 1) the local identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat province for designs on fabrics. 2) the batik pattern of Samphaothong Group and, 3) Guidelines for developing batik patterns to enhance local identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat. The data were collected from a target group of 27 people by purposive selection. The research instruments were interviews, participant and non-participant observation. The data were analyzed by using content analysis.
The results were as follows:
- Local identity of Nakhon Si Thammarat 1) Identity of beliefs, e.g., the belief in local tradition, archaeological sites, folk art and culture and natural appearance 2) Local identity in each district in this province, e.g., potteries and swallows.
- Batik fabric patterns of the Samphaothong Batik Group consist of 3 characteristics. They are 1) patterns were adapted from nature, geometric patterns, Thai and molding patterns, animal patterns, unique to the province pattern, and the patterns required by customers’ organizations. 2) The colorful shade of pattern design is considered from the suitability of color to various patterns, market demand and the familiarity with coloring. 3) technique of pattern writing for example techniques the batik white and colorful lines.
- Guidelines for developing batik patterns to enhance local identity, the government should encourage local identity as a design guide. It should combine various patterns together and apply local wisdom patterns with modern techniques for developing a variety of products as well as providing training courses
