A Study of Southern Folk Songs: Somjai Sri-uthong's Pleng Bog Troupe in Clongnoi Sub-district, Pakpanang District, Nakorn Si Thammarat Province

Abstract

The objective of qualitative research in ethnomusicology aims to study history, works, components, inheritance, essences, analyze the melodies of both traditional and applied styles performance, and also the improvement of Somjai Sri-utong‘s Pleng Bog troupe in Klong Noi sub-district, Pak Panang District, Nakorn Si Thammarat Province. The concept and theory used in this study are analyzing and synthesizing all information related to Pleng Bog 1) study the history, works, components and inheritance of Somjai Sri-utong’s Pleng Bog troupe, 1.1) Ethnomusicology process, 1.2) The way of succession of local philosophers 1.3) Trugo theory, :2) study the essences, analyze melodies and rhythms of Pleng Bog, 2.1) Cantometrics theory, 2.2) Ethnomusicological analyzing of rhythm and melodies, :3) study the changes of the Somjai Sri-utong’s Pleng Bog troupe, 3.1) social regulations, 3.2) Formalism theory. The study shows that the Somjai Sri-utong’s Pleng Bog troupe was founded in 1982. There are 4 members in a troupe, 1 vocal and 3 choruses. There are pairs of small cup-shaped cymbals in traditional style performance. Later, there is an applied style performance which has one-side drum, drum, gong and maracas. There are additional musical instruments, namely tambourine, thap, gong, maracas. This was due to the values of people who turned their attention to new forms of entertainment media such as radio, television, bands, online media, etc., affecting the Pleng Bog that used to be the traditional mass media therefore the Pleng Bog must be an adaptation to survive in society.
