The Study of Collective Historical Memory : A Case Study of Multicultural Society Area, Mueang District, Satun Province

Abstract

          This research article aimed to study the collective historical memory of groups of people in the multicultural social space of Mueang District, Satun Province. The study area was conducted in Satun Old Town, Mueang District, Satun Province. This research employed a qualitative research Methodology using a historical approach together with oral history. Data analysis was based on documentary research, participant observation, and in-depth interviews. The informants were selected as representatives of three different groups, namely Thai Muslims, Thai-Chinese people, and Thai Buddhists. The target informants were selected based on the following criteria: representatives of community leaders, local scholars, villagers, government agencies, and relevant organizations, totaling 15 informants. Data collection continued until data saturation was reached.    
     This research article employed the concept of collective memory as an analytical lens for examining the phenomena in the study area. The findings revealed that the various groups of people in the multicultural social space of Satun Old Town, namely Thai Muslims, Thai-Chinese people, and Thai Buddhists, had constructed collective memories and a shared consciousness regarding their past events and experiences. These were shaped by historical backgrounds, ethnic affiliations, narratives, rituals, and social networks, which contributed to the formation of collective memory and a shared sense of being citizens of Satun.
