Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the economic impacts of hosting the Women’s World Volleyball Championship in Thailand. A parallel mixed-methods research design was employed in two phases. Phase 1 examined the economic impacts of hosting the sporting event through semi-structured interviews conducted in depth with 16 key informants. Phase 2 analyzed the factors influencing the economic impacts of hosting the sporting event using data collected through questionnaires administered to 500 participants selected by simple random sampling. Data from Phase 1 were analyzed using content analysis, while data from Phase 2 were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. The findings indicated that the economic impacts of hosting the sporting event comprised four major dimensions: 1) policy and budgetary value for money; 2) the structure of the economic impacts; 3) the development of a sporting legacy and social dimensions; and 4) challenges and success factors. The analysis of factors significantly influencing the economic impacts of hosting the volleyball competition at the .05 level identified four significant factors: accommodation, promoting physical activity and sports among youth, purchasing tickets to attend the competition, and tourism. These factors together explain the variance of the economic impact (R² = 0.650 and predict 63.5% (Adjust R2 = 0.635), which can be written as a forecasting equation. Therefore, the economic impact of hosting the Women's Volleyball World Championship in Thailand = 0.867 + 0.837 accommodation + 0.384 youth promotion of exercise and sports + 0.289 Ticket sales + 0.275 tourism.
