Abstract
This article presents an analysis of Thi-Baan the Series movie, by employing the counterculture theory, which focuses on the contents of the movie and the hidden ideologies behind the production. The research is based on content analysis, contextual analysis, and textual analysis, which was conducted from online sources of information, and the actual movie clips.
The studies revealed that; part 1, radical cultural disjuncture is presented via costumes used in the movie which were created by the movie’s producers. Jeans appear deliberately severed at knee length accompanied by the most modest pairs of sandals. The portrayed images drastically contradict Isan’s strict traditional protocols. For instance, sexual expressions of a character appear uninhibited, and pre-matrimonial living arrangements of the other two characters are also accepted. Part 2, irreconcilable values and beliefs pertaining 2.1) rejection of ancestral ideologies. One of the characters was portrayed as a farmer-turn-entrepreneur who rejected the agrarian lifestyle and adopted urban living arrangements. Furthermore, another character was showed as a defiant recalcitrant who challenged her mother’s moral codes. 2.2) An old Isan utopian image commonly appreciated in the past decades was supplanted by that of the technology-oriented one which characterized as; freedom of sexual expressions, acceptable pre-matrimonial living arrangements, and entrepreneurial endeavors.
