Cyberbullying from the Point of View of Victims and Coping Practices

Abstract
This study aims to investigate cyberbullying among university students from the perspective of victims. It seeks to understand how students perceive their experiences of online bullying, the causes and effects of cyberbullying, and how they cope with its harmful effects. It adopted a qualitative approach using semi-structured in-depth interview with 6 undergraduate students. The finding shows that victims construct the meaning of cyberbullying through the lens of their personal experiences of being bullied. The causes of cyberbullying as perceived by the victims are jealousy, hostility and the desire for entertainment among the bullies. Online platforms have been identified as contributors to cyberbullying, as they provide easy access to digital tools that facilitate and often encourage such behaviour. In terms of psychological impacts, cyberbullying caused the negative impact in mental health leading to physical, social, and academic consequences. To cope with cyberbullying of the victims, there are many different practices including ignoring the behavior, confronting the perpetrators using technological tools, and seeking support from others.
