IMPACT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON ILLEGAL TRANSBOUNDARY MOVEMENT OF PLASTIC WASTE IN THAILAND

Abstract
Illegal transboundary movement of plastic waste has been a persistent problem. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the world was already facing challenge in the waste management sector and Illegal transboundary movement of plastic waste, where the world generates over 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste and due to the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) the quantity of plastic waste increased across the world observing lockdown, social distancing measure of staying at home and hospital services created risks and challenges associated with illegal plastic waste control at the border. The main objectives of this paper were to analyses the status of illegal transboundary movement of plastic waste in recent years, and address the discussions on the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on illegal transboundary movement of waste in Thailand. It also provides useful insights into border control management and possible way forward.
