Understanding Bipolar Disorder and guideline for treating employee with mental health problem in organization

Abstract

Bipolar disorder is characterized by severe mood illness which extremely change of mood, thought, and behavior. It is also known as manic depression because a person's mood can alternate between elevated mood and depression. Bipolar illness is a significantly source of problem in mental health, interpersonal relationships and job performance. Employer may have a negative attitude to those employee that they are unable to perform the job. The organization may reluctant to employ the bipolar disorder employees. However, In present, mental health professional effectively integrated biological and psycho-social model in treatment plan, Researched evidences suggests that effective treatment for bipolar disorder can reduce symptoms and restore individual’s ability. Understanding and providing appropriate support in workplace will be benefits to employer. It can help to improve employee mental health and job performance not only individual with mental illness but also all employees. This article aims to describe fundamental information of bipolar disorder and practical guideline to support individual with mental illness in workplace.
