Life: A Study of Conceptual Metaphors in The Thai Language

The purpose of this article is to examine metaphors in the Thai language that represent life concepts and study the viewpoints of Thai language users as shown in these lifemetaphors. The author gathered the data from academic writing, non-academic writing, fiction, newspapers, and miscellanies in the Thai National Corpus of the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University using the conceptual metaphors of Lakoff and Johnson [10] and Kövecses [9]
Five life metaphors are revealed in this study, namely life as a journey, life as an object, life as a struggle, life as a drama, and life as food. All 5 metaphors can reflect perspectives or convey ideas and understanding about life or living in 3 main points: 1) lifestyle, 2) life experience, and 3) value of life.
