Old Town Takuapa: Identity Construction for Nostalgia Tourism

Abstract


This research aims to investigate the construction of an identity for nostalgiatourism in the Old Town Takuapa. The data of this qualitative research werecollected from in-depth interviews of 10 informants consisting of elderly people who could provide historical data, activities organizers, local entrepreneurs,state officials, vendors, residents of the Old Town and tourists visiting the area.In addition, data were collected through non-participant observations. In dataanalysis, the data were classified, interpreted, concluded, and presented with analytical description. The results showed that constructing a new meaning by organizing activities to make the area a nostalgia tourist destination is to revive the past identity through constructing it with activities, traditional local costumes and dishes. Culture is commoditized to serve tourism, add value, and economicvalue to them. This is conducted through conservation and development of the community roots for survival by utilization of capital of the past.
