A Study of Circumstances and Problems on Chinese Language Teaching and Learning in a Secondary School, Yala Province

Abstract
This research aimed to study the circumstances on Chinese language teaching and learning in a secondary school, Yala province in terms of purposes of teaching and learning, learning problems, teaching and learning activities, and teaching and learning materials. The samples were 399 students who electively enrolled in the Chinese language course in a secondary school, Yala province. Multi-stage sampling method was used. The research tool could be divided into 2 parts. The first part was about the respondents’ general information questions and the second part was about students’ opinions questions on the Chinese language teaching and learning in a secondary school, Yala province. Mean and standard deviation (S.D) were employed for the statistical data analysis. The results showed that the students’ purposes of learning Chinese were because of the greatly advanced economy of China. The overall average was 3.65 (S.D. = 0.75). The students’ learning problem was the lack of Chinese speaking skill. The overall average was 3.10 (S.D. = 0.92). Chinese singing activity was commonly found as a teaching and learning activity. The overall average was 2.57 (S.D. = 0.79). In case of teaching and learning materials, teachers rarely introduced the updated materials into the classroom. The overall average was 2.39 (S.D. = 1.01).
