Abstract

Teenage pregnancy happens when women are engaged in sexual activity but are not actually physically and mentally ready to be pregnant. If a pregnant teenager lacks maturity to face and cope with life crisis, it will result in unhappiness, stressful life situations, and judgments from society. Therefore, this research was carried out to study the effects of existential group counseling and Islamic principles for enhancement on coping strategies of Muslim adolescent mothers in the southern border provinces. A total of 16 young, pregnant Muslim mothers between 15-19 years old who recently had children were selected by purpose sampling. They were divided into 2 groups of 8 persons each: experimental group and control group. The experimental group received 11 sessions of group counseling based on the existentialism concept with Islamic principles, with a duration of 1 hour per session. The instrument used in this research was the coping questionnaire, and the group counseling programs were based on existential group counseling and Islamic principles. The statistics used for data analysis were frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, relative gain score, Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Ranks test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The results revealed that, after the intervention, the experimental group Muslim adolescent mothers had a higher score of coping strategies than before the experiment with a statistical significant of .05, had higher individual coping strategies scores than those before the experimental, and scored higher than those of the control group with statistical significant of .05. Based on the research results, effects of existential group counseling and Islamic principles can be used as a guideline for the development of adolescent mothers to have better coping strategies.
