A Study of the Research Budget Status of Research Funded by International Funding Sources of Mahidol University in the Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted research activities and funding at Mahidol University. The authors examined the status of research budgets received from international funding sources during this period to analyze the budget status of research projects funded during fiscal years 2021-2023, compare the proportion of research funds granted by discipline and funding source, and compare the budget of research projects granted by affiliated faculties or institutes by collecting data from contract documents and database of the Research Promotion Unit, Research Management and Development Division, Mahidol University, a total of 269 projects were studied, compiled, categorized, and analyzed using statistical tools. The study reveals the trend of research project budgets from international funding sources at Mahidol University increased during the COVID-19 pandemic period, with the highest budget received in fiscal year 2023, totaling 878,243,292.34 baht. Additionally, Research projects granted in a range of 1,000,001 to 5,000,000 baht per project had the highest number. Medical and Health Sciences research received the highest number of funded projects, with the Department of Defense (DoD) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) being the highest funding sources approved. The Faculty of Tropical Medicine received the highest research funding from international funding sources during the COVID-19 pandemic. Research outcomes demonstrate Mahidol University's expertise in the field of Medical Science and Health, aligning with the global pandemic situation and the funding policies of international sources, which focus on supporting research in medical and health-related fields. These findings serve as guidelines to enhance the efficiency of research funding services at Mahidol University, by studying funding policies and promoting them in line with researchers' expertise to increase the chances of approval from external funding sources.
