The Development of Elective Course on HIV/AIDS Patient Care for A Bachelor’s Degree Student Nurse

Abstract

AIDS epidemic in Thailand remains an enormous problem. The purposes of this research were to develop the elective course on HIV/AIDS patient  care to enhancing 1) knowledge and skills about HIV/AIDS patient care basing on community based 2) good attitude to HIV/AIDS patient care. The  research procedures were consisted of 5 main steps: 1) collecting and analyzing available data on nursing education trends, status and trend of the HIV/AIDS, and innovation of HIV/AIDS patient care used for the gridlines in developing the course 2) developing HIV/AIDS patient elective course 3) verifying course by course–connoisseurship with experts in nursing and curriculum development 4) implementating course by using a pretest–posttest experimental design. The sample group comprised 54 fourth year student nurses from Boromarajonani Phayao College of Nursing, during  5 weeks, and course evaluation was done through knowledge test, written reflective journal, and case reports 5) improving the course by the subject area experts’ recommendations. The finding from course implementation were indicated the posttest mean score of  the experimental group was  higher than the pretest mean score at a significant level of 0.05, while reflective journal of students indicated that the attitude of student nurses was better for HIV/AIDS patient care, and in terms of the students’ opinions towards the developed course were at good level. The study also showed  that this new course was appropriate for BSN program, but  the course evaluation must be made clear, especially authentic evaluation, and the especially instructional document should be more concentrated.
