Abstract
Newborns who are admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NICU) and separated from their mother are at the high risk for disturbances in the development of maternal newborn attachment. Many factors associated with non-attending of newborns in the NICU of mothers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore demographic characteristics of attending and non-attending mothers of newborns in the NICU. We also examined whether these demographic factors associated with non-attending of newborns. Forty-seven mothers whose the babies are admitted to the NICU were interviewed. The result showed that 57% of the participants were non-attending mothers and 43% were attending mothers. Within the non-attending mothers, the result showed that 74% had an age range of 21-35 years; 44% earned high school diploma degree: 67% lived with extended families, 48% were the first pregnant women; 59% had preterm delivery (gestation) age of 28-37 weeks), 78% had babies with low birth weight (<2,500 grams). For the attending mothers, the results showed that 60% had an age range of 21-35 years; 90% earned high school diploma degree: 92% lived with extended families, 65% were the first pregnant women; 55% had preterm delivery (gestation age of 28-37 weeks), 65% had babies with low birth weight (<2,500 grams). Neither demographic factors were statistically significant associated with attending of newborns in the NICU (P value = 0.15-0.42). However, it is more likely that some factors may be associated with the non-attending of newborns in the NICU of mothers. Future research is needed.
