The Effects of Learning Management Using the SQ5R Reading Process to Promote Critical Reading Ability and Reading Behavior of Elementary School Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
Critical reading has been a problem for elementary students and is needed to be developed together with teaching and learning management which emphasizes on child center. The purposes of this research were; to study the efficiency of SQ5R lesson plans; to compare the critical reading ability of students between before and after treatment; to study reading behavior of students through SQ5R model; to study the student’s satisfaction through SQ5R model. The samples of this research were 52 students from grade 5. The samples were selected by a cluster random sampling technique. There were 4 instruments used for collecting data included; the critical reading lesson plans using SQ5R model with reading practices. The results of quality assessment of suitability; the critical reading ability test; The reading behavior assessment and; The satisfaction assessment. The statistics used for data analysis were percentage, mean, standard deviation and t-test. The results of the research revealed that: The lesson plan for critical reading learning management using SQ5R model with reading practices met the criteria at 82.25/81.03 of efficiency value; The critical reading ability of grade 5 students through SQ5R model after treatment were significantly higher than before at the statistical level of .05; The reading behavior of grade 5 students through SQ5R model was at the high level ( = 4.50); and 4) The grade 5 students were satisfied with the critical reading learning management using SQ5R model with reading practices at the highest level (
= 4.55). The results can be use as guidelines to design learning activity to match the need of student, learning reflection, reading behavior adjustment, reading behavior enforcement, and critical reading and high order thinking development.
