Operational State and Problems, Needs and Guidelines for Operational Developing of the Community Book House Project for Promotion of Reading Among People in Yala Province

Abstract

The Community Book Houses in Yala Province have encountered problems and obstacles in operations and also have not acquired appropriate operational guidelines. Therefore, it was necessary to conduct a research to (1) study operational state and problems of the community book house project in Yala Province; (2) study needs for developing the community book house project to promote reading among people in Yala Province; and (3) propose guidelines for developing the community book house project to promote reading among people in Yala Province. The study groups of 220 people consisted of  Directors of the district Non-formal and Informal Education Centre, teachers of Sub-district NIE Centre, librarians of the district public libraries, owners of the Community Book Houses and reading promotion volunteers. The guideline assessment was conducted by 11 experts and related people. Data were analyzed by percentage, mean, and content analysis. Research results found that: (1) For the operational state, most of them were located the owner's houses. Reading promotion activities available were painting. The operational problems were, the lack of materials, equipment, facilities and public relation activities. Moreover, media were not available in various forms and met the needs of target groups. (2) The needs for the developing the Community Book House project included; allocating adequate budget, locating should near community and having continuously supervision. (3) Guidelines for developing comprised              5 aspects. They were: 1) Administration, 2) Location and facilities, 3) Reading promotion activities and media, 4) Supervision and Evaluation, and 5) Community and network participation. In brief, the provincial and district Non-Formal and Informal Education offices should apply these guidelines for the development of concerned personnel and parties in order to be equipped with knowledge and comprehension on the Book Houses operations in order to enhance service availability and appropriateness to the public.
