A Study of Psychological Characteristics Related to Research Competency of Pre–Service Teachers in Surindra Rajabhat University

Abstract
Teacher production institutions should cultivate research competency in pre-service teachers, as currently they are lack knowledge, skill, attitude towards research. The objectives of this research were 1) to study psychological characteristics and research competency of pre–service teachers 2) to find the relationship between psychological characteristics and research competency of pre–service teachers 3) to create an equation to predict research competency of pre–service teachers. The sample comprised 245 pre–service teachers who were in the third year at Surindra Rajabhat University, the academic year 2023, selected by a cluster random sampling method. The research instruments included a psychological characteristics measurement form and research competency assessment form. Data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation and multiple regression analysis. The results of the research revealed that 1) pre–service teachers overall had a high level of self-esteem, self-regulation and achievement motivation, a moderate level of anxiety and a high level of research competency 2) achievement motivation, self-regulation and self-esteem were positively associated with research competency with the statistical significance level of 0.05 3) achievement motivation, self-regulation and self-esteem were able to predict research competency of pre–service teachers with the statistical significance level of 0.05, and collaboratively predicted research competency by 53.50%, which can be written in the form of the following equations. The equation in the form of raw scores: Y = 0.954 + 0.768 XACH + 0.523 XREG + 0.344 XEST The equation in the form of standardized scores: Z = 0.743 ZACH + 0.506 ZREG + 0.299 ZEST. The relevant organizations should utilize the acquired knowledges to further development of pre-service teachers.
