Collaborative Management Model of Work-integrated Learning: A Case Study of Tourism Business Management Program of Prince of Songkla University in Surat Thani Campus
Main Article Content
Abstract
The main objectives of this research are to study the needs, problems and obstacles in managing work-Integrated learning (WIL), and to establish a collaborative management model for WIL integration.
The study employs qualitative research methods. Primary data was collected through focus group discussions and in-depth interviews utilizing semi-structured interview guides. The total sample of 49 key stakeholders of the program consisted of 20 tourism industry establishments in Koh Phangan District (Surat Thani Province) and Krabi Province, 22 students, 6 faculty members from the program and 1 administrator from Prince of Songkla University, Surat Thani Campus. Additionally, the research involved studying various relevant documents related to the program's operation. The study results indicate that most establishments still lack knowledge and understanding about work-integrated learning. They do not have mentoring systems in place, are unable to allocate experts from various fields to supervise students and have concerns about the associated costs. However, these establishments are interested in collaborating with educational institutions to support work-integrated learning. Therefore, the key principle of this collaborative management model is the university policy related to work-integrated learning integration. The policy is jointly implementated between the university, the program/major and the establishments, with all parties benefiting from its execution. Overall, students’ satisfaction with the work-integrated learning approach is at high level. The results of this research serve as a guideline for designing work-integrated learning for other academic disciplines in the future.
