The Strategies of Foreign Action Movies Translation into Thai

Abstract

The objective of this research is 1) to study and analyze the strategies of foreign action movies translation into Thai language, and 2) to study the perception’s result of movies viewers towards the strategies of foreign action movies translation into Thai language. For the research methodology, 100 names of foreign action movies that have been translated into Thai language during the year 2013 – 2016 have been compiled. The sample group consists of 120 first to fourth-year students of Mahidol University, Thammasat University and Suan Dusit Rajaphat University. The tools used for this research consist of 1) timetable recording information about an analysis of strategies of foreign action movies’ name translation into Thai language, 2) questionnaire to survey the perception of movies viewers. Data analysis has been used by way of percentage, mean and standard deviation (S.D.).  The result of research is found that 1) the translators use 19 strategies of foreign action movies translation. The most popular strategy used by translators is making a new name which is not based on the original one, 2) the perception’s result of the movies viewers towards the strategies of foreign action movies translation into Thai language is found that the name of foreign action movies translated by using the strategies of transliterated words with some parts and adding the content of Thai language based on the content of movies’ story which is the most interesting strategies of movies’ name translation because it is the use of eye-catching language that arouses the interest of viewers. The name of foreign action movies translated by the use of strategies in translating some parts of it and transliterated words with some parts, including adding the content of Thai language based on the movies’ story which is the strategies of movies’ name translation that attracts the interest of people the most and makes them to decide watching the movies since there have been the transmission of meaning from English original name translated into Thai harmoniously. The name of foreign action movies translated by way of all transliterated words without Thai language added which is the strategies of movies’ name translation that brings about the memory and understanding of the movies’ name easily. It is also short, concise and easy to pronounce which is suitable for being used as the transliterated words to be Thai language.
